History of Shahjahanabad
Learn about the evolution of the newest and the seventh city of Delhi
Red Fort, along with the Taj Mahal, represents the zenith of Mughal architecture and creativity. The architectural refinement and detailing of the fort is majestic. The Red Fort gets its name from the red sandstone cladding on the massive walls of the fort. When Emperor Shah Jahan shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi, to create a new and the seventh city of Delhi- Shahjahanabad, he built a fort palace for himself. This fort represented an architectural style derived from a fusion of traditions of the Persian, Islamic, and Hindu Style. Hence, it became a source of inspiration for other buildings in Rajasthan, Agra, and further in the Islamic World. Because of its unique construction style and cultural importance, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007.
